Shopify POS Discounts: Codes, POS Lite & POS Pro
Learn how Shopify POS discount codes work with AIOD on POS Lite and POS Pro, including automatic offers on Pro and one-tap code application from the AIOD tile.
A promotion that works online does not automatically work at the register. In Shopify POS, the result depends on the discount type, whether the offer is available to the POS sales channel, and whether the store uses POS Lite or POS Pro. AIOD gives teams a practical way to manage those differences—especially when a Lite cashier needs to apply a code quickly.
Picture this: you run three stores, and only the Chicago location has excess winter inventory. You want a weekend offer there, not at your New York or Austin registers. Your staff also need a way to honor it without stopping the line to search a spreadsheet for a code. That sounds like a small request. In practice, POS plan limits, location settings, and discount eligibility can turn it into a surprisingly fiddly setup. This guide is for the owner trying to get the offer live—and to know exactly what the cashier should see when the first customer walks in.
Quick answer: what works on POS Lite and POS Pro?
| Discount workflow | POS Lite | POS Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Enter a POS-enabled discount code | Yes | Yes |
| Tap an AIOD tile to choose and apply a code | Yes | Yes |
| Have an eligible automatic discount apply without a cashier tap | No | Yes |
The important distinction: the AIOD tile on POS Lite is a faster code-based workflow, not an automatic discount. Shopify reserves automatic discounts in POS for POS Pro. The tile gives Lite staff a visible, tap-to-apply path for eligible AIOD codes so they do not have to remember or type each one.
If you only need a straightforward code that cashiers can type, Shopify POS already supports that on both plans. The choice becomes more interesting when you want the offer to apply by itself on Pro, make the code easy for Lite staff to find, or restrict an AIOD offer to particular stores. Decide those three things first; the rest of the setup follows from them.
How does a Shopify POS discount code work?
A discount code is an offer identified by a code, such as INSTORE10. A cashier can enter it in POS when the offer is
active and available to that store's POS channel. The cart must still meet the offer's conditions: eligible items, spend or quantity
thresholds, customer rules, dates, and any location selection. A visible code is not a promise that every cart qualifies.
In AIOD, configure the offer in its discount template, enable the POS sales channel, and select locations when the template calls for them. Test with the same products and customer conditions the cashier will see. The AIOD tile can then surface applicable code offers and provide an Apply code action for the current cart.
Think of the code and the tile as two separate pieces. The code is the promotion. The tile is a shortcut for staff to find and apply it. Adding the tile does not switch an online-only offer on for POS, override the selected locations, or waive a minimum spend. That separation matters when a cashier says, “I can see the offer, but it isn't taking anything off.” The next question is not whether to reinstall the tile; it is whether this cart and this store meet the offer's rules.
Run the offer in the US stores you choose
A national campaign may belong everywhere. A store-clearance offer usually does not. AIOD's discount setup lets you enable POS and choose All locations or select particular POS locations in the offer itself. For the Chicago example, select Chicago and leave New York and Austin out. The discount logic checks the retail location of the POS cart; a selected-location offer should not apply at a location you did not include. This gives a multi-store team a direct, per-offer control instead of relying on cashiers to remember where a code is allowed.
Be precise about the comparison with native Shopify. Shopify's basic discount-code flow does not offer the same simple per-location picker inside each code. Shopify does have Retail markets, which can target groups of POS Pro locations where the merchant's plan supports that feature. AIOD's advantage here is the direct location selection in its discount setup, including for a code workflow used on POS Lite—not a claim that Shopify has no location controls of any kind. If your offer must be limited by store, verify it at one included and one excluded register before launch.
How AIOD supports discounts on POS Pro
POS Pro supports two useful AIOD paths. An eligible automatic offer can apply in the cart without the cashier entering a code. A code-based offer can be applied by entering its code or by opening the AIOD tile and tapping Apply code. The tile is optional for the automatic path, but useful when staff need to discover or choose an available code promotion.
For example, a Pro location might run an automatic in-store volume offer and keep a separate, code-based VIP promotion in the tile. Configure the POS channel and location for each offer, then test the cart and any combination rules before training staff. Do not assume that every online offer, or every combination of offers, will carry over unchanged to POS.
Say your Chicago store offers 10% off when a customer buys two eligible jackets. On POS Pro, you can configure an eligible AIOD automatic discount for that store, add two qualifying jackets to a test cart, and check that the savings appear without anyone touching a code field. If the same customer presents a separate VIP code, do not assume both offers will stack. Shopify's POS discount combinations have their own rules; set the combination behavior deliberately and test the final total before you train staff to promise it.
This is where automatic behavior earns its keep: the associate can focus on sizing and service while the qualifying promotion appears in the cart. The AIOD tile can still be useful for a code-based event or staff-selected offer, but it is not what makes the Pro automatic offer automatic.
How AIOD supports discounts on POS Lite
POS Lite supports discount codes, but not Shopify POS automatic discounts. AIOD's tile is the useful bridge: staff open it from the POS smart grid, find a POS-applicable code offer, and tap Apply code. AIOD attempts to apply that code to the current cart. The shopper receives the discount only if the cart qualifies.
- Create an AIOD code-based offer and enable its POS sales channel and intended locations.
- In Shopify admin, go to Sales channels → Point of Sale → Open editor.
- Choose Add tile → Embedded apps → AIOD, place the tile, and save the smart grid.
- At checkout, add the qualifying products, open the AIOD tile, choose the offer, and tap Apply code.
- Confirm the discount and total in the POS cart before taking payment.
This is a cashier-triggered, one-tap code application. It removes code memorization and typing from the in-store workflow; it does not bypass Shopify's POS Lite restriction on automatic discounts.
Imagine the same Chicago weekend sale on POS Lite. An associate adds the two jackets, taps the AIOD tile, chooses the named Chicago offer, and taps Apply code. The code is submitted to the cart, and the associate checks the new total. If the customer only has one jacket, the tap may not produce a discount because the quantity rule is unmet. That is expected behavior, not evidence that the tile is broken. If the customer shops at Austin instead, the offer should not apply if Austin was excluded in the AIOD location selector.
For owners, the real benefit is operational: staff see the promotion where they sell, without memorizing a campaign code or improvising a manual markdown. You still control the offer's conditions. The cashier still makes a conscious choice to apply it. That is a more useful promise than saying “automatic discounts on Lite,” which would set the wrong expectation.
Watch the POS Lite tile flow
This AIOD walkthrough shows the tile-based workflow in Shopify POS Lite. Use it alongside the steps above; confirm the current interface and offer eligibility in your own store before rolling it out to staff.
A launch checklist for a busy retail team
- Name the offer plainly. A cashier should recognize “Chicago weekend jackets” faster than an internal campaign ID.
- Choose the method. Use automatic on eligible POS Pro locations when no staff action is wanted; use a code and AIOD tile when the cashier should apply it, especially on Lite.
- Set the boundaries. Confirm POS is enabled, select the intended locations, and review products, customers, thresholds, dates, exclusions, and combination settings.
- Test both sides of the rule. Try a qualifying and a nonqualifying cart. For a location-specific offer, test one included and one excluded store.
- Write a one-sentence cashier instruction. For example: “Add two eligible jackets, tap the AIOD tile, select Chicago weekend jackets, then confirm the discount before payment.”
Do the test before signs go up or emails go out. A failed promotion is hardest to debug while a customer is standing at the register, and a manual discount given in frustration can make it harder to see which rule actually failed.
Why a POS discount may not appear or apply
- Wrong channel or location: check that the AIOD offer is active and enabled for POS and the intended store.
- Cart does not qualify: verify products, customer, quantity, spend threshold, schedule, and exclusions.
- Expecting automatic behavior on Lite: use a code offer and tap Apply code in the AIOD tile, or use POS Pro for supported automatic discounts.
- Tile missing: add the AIOD embedded-app tile to the POS smart grid and save the editor changes.
- Staff cannot apply a code: review the staff member's POS discount-code permission and test with an authorized account.
Start with a small test cart at each location. If a code fails, record the offer, location, cart contents, customer, and error message before changing the promotion. That makes it much easier to distinguish a setup problem from a rule that is working as designed.
Check the cart in this order: plan → offer status → POS setting → location → cart rules → staff permission. If the store is on Lite and the team expected a no-tap automatic offer, stop there: the plan is the constraint. If the tile is visible but the code does not change the total, inspect the cart and selected location. If only one cashier cannot apply it, check their permission. This order saves time because it starts with the broadest limits and moves toward the individual sale.
Common questions before you train staff
Can POS Lite use an AIOD automatic discount if I add the tile?
No. The tile can help a cashier apply an AIOD code-based offer, but POS Lite does not support automatic discounts. If no-tap application is essential, check POS Pro at that location.
Can I select just one store for an AIOD POS offer?
Yes, when the AIOD discount template exposes the POS location selector. Choose the desired location rather than All locations, save the offer, and test both the included store and a store you left out. Location selection is an eligibility rule; it does not replace the product, customer, or schedule rules.
Does tapping Apply code guarantee the customer gets the discount?
No. It attempts to apply the code to the current POS cart. The cart must still meet the offer's conditions and Shopify must accept it. Cashiers should look at the final cart total before taking payment.
Which setup should you choose?
Choose POS Pro automatic discounts when the offer should trigger without staff action. Choose an AIOD code offer with the tile when staff should select a named promotion, when a code is part of a campaign, or when the store runs POS Lite. Direct code entry remains a fallback on both plans. The right setup is the one your cashiers can repeat accurately during a busy shift—not just the one that works in a demo cart.
Shopify's POS discount documentation explains the plan-level distinction. If your team needs help translating an existing offer to in-store use, talk to AIOD with your POS plan, locations, and promotion rules.
