Shopify native discounts are a good starting point. They are built into the admin, work for straightforward offers, and cover common product, order, shipping, and Buy X Get Y discount types. AIOD becomes useful when the campaign has more conditions than native settings can comfortably explain.

Use Shopify native discounts when the rule is simple

Native discounts are usually enough when the offer has one clear audience, one clear threshold, one reward, and limited exclusions. Examples include free shipping over a cart value, a simple product markdown, or a basic automatic Buy X Get Y offer.

Use AIOD when the campaign has real operating rules

AIOD is a better fit when merchandising or growth teams need to combine customer tags, collections, markets, quantity rules, gifts, exclusions, schedules, and stack permissions.

Need Native Shopify AIOD
Simple product or shipping discount Good fit Good fit when part of a broader campaign
Gift plus volume tier plus shipping threshold Harder to manage Designed for one workflow
Customer tags, exclusions, markets, schedules Limited depending on rule type Built into advanced rules
Stack-safe campaign preview Requires manual QA Centralized rule model

Decision rule

If support can explain the campaign in one sentence, native Shopify discounts may be enough. If support needs a matrix to explain which shopper gets which result, move the campaign into AIOD before the launch.
